Betrayed

Honor.

That was something that she had always believed in. She was raised to believe that serving her country was a worthwhile cause. A noble cause.

Her father gave years of his life to his country. She did. Her brother did. They all sacrificed because they believed in something bigger than themselves.

Even though she knew the darker sider of their work, even though she knew the risks she had never thought they would be so cruely betrayed.

Her father was murdered and it was just swept under the rug. No investigation. No trial. No punishment. No retribution.

Just lies.

Her father's sacrifice was never even acknowledged. Her family's pain was forgotten. They were all forgotten. Those responsible - they never paid. They still had their reputations, their freedom, their lives.

For all their talk of justice and integrity - they had never admitted to what they'd done.

Cowards.

Oh God, if he thought he couldn't feel any worse about this... He hadn't known about Ryan's grandchild. Hadn't known about Caitlin. And he definitely hadn't known that that day was her birthday. He can feel something inside him shrivel up and die at the knowledge.

"No, I didn't know," he says, his throat closing. He blinks rapidly, trying not to let her see that his eyes were watering. "I-I'm sorry, Christine."

She crosses her arms at her chest and looks away. Still feeling raw, tears still at her eyes. Seeing him cry didn't help her hold onto her anger, the only thing that was keeping her standing.

"Well, now you know," she says tightly.

He gulps, trying to dislodge the lump in his throat, but it doesn't work. He has to get out of there before he completely breaks down, he can't do that in front of her.

"Yeah, I do," he says hoarsely. "And now I think I should leave you alone. You know where to find me."

He reaches for the doorknob, turning back to her as he opens the door. "Christine...I'm sorry it ever turned out like this," he says, his voice quivering, before he turns and walks out, hurrying back to his room.

Chris closes her eyes, trying not to cry, and only opens them when he's gone. She walks quickly to the door and locks it.

She then goes over to the bed and lays down on it, curling into a fetal position.

Face half-buried in the pillow, she lets herself cry for the first time after hearing the news.
