Betrayed
Honor.
That was something that she had always believed in. She was raised to believe that serving her country was a worthwhile cause. A noble cause.
Her father gave years of his life to his country. She did. Her brother did. They all sacrificed because they believed in something bigger than themselves.
Even though she knew the darker sider of their work, even though she knew the risks she had never thought they would be so cruely betrayed.
Her father was murdered and it was just swept under the rug. No investigation. No trial. No punishment. No retribution.
Just lies.
Her father's sacrifice was never even acknowledged. Her family's pain was forgotten. They were all forgotten. Those responsible - they never paid. They still had their reputations, their freedom, their lives.
For all their talk of justice and integrity - they had never admitted to what they'd done.
Cowards.

"Did you know that, Jack. September 20th? The day you murdered my father," she spat the words out, "That was my birthday. Happy fuckin' birthday to me, huh."

"No, I didn't know," he says, his throat closing. He blinks rapidly, trying not to let her see that his eyes were watering. "I-I'm sorry, Christine."

"Well, now you know," she says tightly.

"Yeah, I do," he says hoarsely. "And now I think I should leave you alone. You know where to find me."
He reaches for the doorknob, turning back to her as he opens the door. "Christine...I'm sorry it ever turned out like this," he says, his voice quivering, before he turns and walks out, hurrying back to his room.

She then goes over to the bed and lays down on it, curling into a fetal position.
Face half-buried in the pillow, she lets herself cry for the first time after hearing the news.
