Pushing the car door open, she was hit by the sweltering heat and air heavy enough that she could feel. The sun was setting but the heat hadn't abated, still in the upper 90's.
The clouds overhead rumbled, causing Coco to stir in the backseat. Some rain, and relief from the heat, would be welcome even if she would spend the rest of the evening listening to Coco bark from her hiding spot under the bed.
Dog in one hand and the bags in the other, she walked towards her condo wondering how she was going to manage the doors. A thunderclap overhead caused Coco to squirm in her arms, barking loudly.
"Coco, shut up," Chris whined. Between the thunderstorm tonight and the fireworks the past few days, she wondered how the dog still had the energy to bark. Or why none of her meighbors had complained yet.
With some careful maneuvering, Chris managed to unlock the door with her keys and, back turned, stepped over the threshold.
But she didn't find herself in her condo's hallway.
