OOM: Date Night

Chris and Jack step out of the bar, into a cold New York City night.

The first big difference from Milliways? All the noise. The sound of horns from the cars on the street, cops blowing their whistles as they direct traffic and someone down the street playing a violin come together to create their own symphony.

She pulls her wrap a little tighter around her shoulders and looks over at Jack with a smile. "Surprise."

"Maybe after dinner," she says before taking a sip of her wine.

"All right, I'll wait, then," he says, lightly, though there's something making the skin at the back of his neck tingle.

He glances around the room under the guise of taking a sip of his wine, and he notices a couple people looking away from him quickly. He's not so sure this is an alternate universe--but then how could the people in the restaraunt know who he was?

Chris notices this and looks at him with some concern. Her voice just above a whisper, she asks, "Jack, what is it?"

He debates for a moment whether he should just dismiss it, but decides he might as well tell her.

"Sorry. It's just it looked like a couple people were...well, staring at me. It's probably just me being paranoid. This is the fist time I've been out of the bar in a while," he says, trying to sound more casual about it than he feels.

"We could go if you want."

He shakes his head, about to answer when the waiter shows with their orders. He waits until he's gone before answering, "No, no. Like I said, it's probably just me being paranoid. It's fine, sweetheart."

She nods, then stands. "I'll be back in a moment. Restroom."

"Sure," he says, picking up his fork.

When Chris enters the restroom it's empty but when she exits the stall she notices two teenage girls standing and chatting by the mirrors. She doesn't pay much attention to either till she moves closer to the sinks to wash her hands and notices their conversation has stopped.

And that they're staring at her.

She looks herself in the mirror, smoothing her dress and making sure nothing is out of place. Nothing is and Chris finds herself confused by the attention. Chris looks over at them, smiling nervously. One girl says hi, while the other looks away, still giggling.

Ok! Chris turns her back to dry her hands and can make out some of what they're saying.

"No... Ask her what it's like to kiss Brad Pitt,"one girl says before dissolving into giggles.

Huh? Her hands dry, Chris turns briefly towards the girls and nods in greeting. Producing more giggles from them. Thoroughly confused, she exits the restroom and walks back to her table.

Now it's Jack's turn to look at her with a puzzled expression. "Something wrong?" he asks.

She sits down across from him, still confused. "I don't know... There were these two teenage girls in the bathroom and the kept giggling and looking at me. But it seemed like they recognized me..." her voice trails off and she gives Jack a small smile.

"It sounds crazy, I know."

The server walks by to refill their wine glasses.

"One of them wanted to know what it was like to kiss Brad Pitt," she adds, still puzzling over it.

As he walks away, the server can be heard mumbling "tourists" in a disdainful tone.

Jack blinks. "What?"

There's another moment of blinking before he adds, "Is there something you're not telling me?" with a soft smile.

"I'm the real reason Brad left Jennifer Aniston several years ago," she says sarcastically.

"We met at Spago and one thing lead to another..." her voice trails off, Chris is uninterested in keeping with the charade. She takes a sip of her wine.

"I must have misheard them."

Because nothing else makes sense.

He shrugs. "Maybe they just think you look like someone. It's New York; if you look like an actress, it's not so unbeliveable they might mistake you for them. I used to get it in L.A. occasionally."

"Really? Who'd you get mistaken for?"

He shrugs. "Kiefer Sutherland and Kenneth Branagh. And some people can't take a hint."

Chris laughs at this. "Kenneth Brannagh? Really?"

He sighs. "Yes. How, I don't know. Besides the hair."

Chris tilts her head, looking at him. "I could see the Kiefer resemblance more. Except I think he's supposed to be kinda short."

"Yeah, I've heard that a couple times. 'You're taller than you look!' At least no one ever did it when I was undercover or in the middle of an op."

"I wonder who they thought I was?"

"I don't know; I'm not exaclty an expert on Brad Pitt's movies," he says with a teasing smile.

"Yeah, I'm more of a George Clooney fan myself."

"Well you know my taste in movies," he says. Not surprisingly they tended to run to action, some espionage, some drama and, oh yes, Lord of the Rings. The extended editions.
