Chris wrapped the brown shawl around her shoulders. It was a pleasant night for October in New York, relatively warm and dry. It was warm enough for her to wear the dress she had bought on sale a couple months ago. It was an impulse, brighter and a more daring than the other dresses she had in her closet. It was a silk halter dress in a soft orange color with a skirt that flowed to just below her knees. She remembered trying on the dress, imagining the look on Jack's face when he saw her in it.

But she wasn't with Jack tonight.

“This is my place right here,” she said, pointing to the brownstone a few steps away.

Rohan nodded and kept pace beside her. “Nice place. I'm still renting.”

Jeannie's coworker. She wasn't sure how her sister-in-law had managed to talk Rohan into a blind date but Chris knew Jeannie could be hard to say no to. Chris had tried but there was no good reason she couldn't go out on one date. At least not one she could tell anyone else.

And it had been six months. She still thought about getting back to Milliways but less frequently and she didn't feel the same homesickness she once did.

Rohan stopped at the bottom of the steps and turned towards her, smiling and hands in his pockets. “So.”

“Actually, I need to stop inside. My dog probably needs to take a walk,” she said with a small smile. “But there's an outdoor cafe just down the block, so we can stop there.”

“Sounds good.”

Chris nodded. “All right.” The last time she had left Coco waiting she came home to mess on the floor and Coco looking at her sadly.

The two ascended the stairs and Chris thought about what she would do if he asked for a second date. The date had been nice and Rohan was attractive enough but she wasn't sure she wanted to extend the date. She didn't want to give him the brush-off either.

Another date, however, was not a good idea and not just because she wasn't over Jack.

It took some time but Chris had finally admitted to herself that she was attracted to James and she knew the feeling was mutual, he had told her as much. She told him she needed time, jumping from one relationship to another hadn't done her much good in the past and she wasn't even ready to let her relationship with Jack go.

But in a month or two, who knows?

“What kind of dog is it?” Rohan asked as she unlocked the door to her house.

“A chihuahua. It's my sister's dog really but I'm taking care of her.” Chris opened the door and stepped into her house with Rohan following behind her. She turned on the lights and grabbed the leash from the hook near the door.

“Coco?”

It was odd that Coco didn't run to greet her. That meant she was either sleeping or getting into trouble.

Chris gave Rohan a small, embarrassed smile. “I think she's hiding, let me go look.”

“It's all right,” he said with a shrug and a grin and Chris started peeking into room.

“Coco!” Chris called in a louder, opening the door to one of the guest rooms. She heard some rustling under the bed and winced. The dog was up to something.

She clapped her hands. “Wanna go out?”

With that Coco sprinted out from under the bed and was out the door before Chris could grab. Chris followed, not wanting her to jump on Rohan.

“Dammit, dog,” she muttered as she pushed open the door ...
