Chris pushed in another hairpin, wincing as it scraped against her scalp. She grabbed another three and used them to pin back a loose tendril just so she could apply her makeup.

She was a little nervous about the wedding and seeing everyone. The thought was at once draining and exciting. She had spent a lot of the week by herself, needing to be alone and think about some things. Chris blew on the mascara wand, then, eyes opened wide, leaned in to apply it to her lashes.

She didn't wear much makeup but she found it strangely comforting when she did. It seemed easier to act the role - professional, happy, whatever - if she was wearing the costume.

Not that she wasn't happy, she thought as she lightly tapped the brush against the container of blush, just that she wasn't in the mood for a wedding today. Or any day this week.

But maybe this is what she needed. Moping around Milliways certainly hadn't done her any good. Chris pulled on a napkin and pressed it between her lips.

And she missed Jack. It sounded odd, he was right down the hall from her. He hadn't gone anywhere but she hadn't spent much time with him and she felt guilty about that after what he'd been through. God, I hope he doesn't think it's his fault.

She took off the robe she'd worn over her dress while doing her makeup. She looked in the mirror again. The bar had given her a green silk halter dress to wear. The straps were beaded and the skirt flared to a slight bias, just below her knees.

Chris stepped into her heels, then grabbed her purse and pushed some tissues inside.

"Oh," she muttered, remembering something. She pulled out the three hairpins and grabbed a brush, running through the front section of her hair so the tendrils could spring back to life.

A quick spritz of hairspray and she was ready.
