The door to Caiti's room was open a crack and Chris peered in. It was a little after three in the afternoon and her sister was asleep. She gently pulled the door closed and continued down the hall.

Caiti's sleeping schedule drove her a little mad. It took her a while to get used to hearing Caiti moving around the house in the middle of the night. Or finding her sound asleep in the middle of the afternoon.

Sleeping patterns like that made it difficult to go to class. Or find a job. Chris wasn't even sure she saw her friends that often. Her sister was home so often, it was strange. She remembered Caiti going out quite a bit. She always seemed to have two or three of her friends around her.

She said she still kept in touch. That was probably true. There were messages on their answering machines sometimes from her friends. And she'd seen a card or two to Caiti, both signed with the message "I miss you".

Hopefully, she'd see one or two of them today.

The weather was nice and they'd decided to have a very small cookout. Just them and some close friends. No birthday cake. No presents. Chris had insisted.

She reached the landing and could see Tori still asleep on the couch and in the kitchen Jeannie was talking on the phone. Chris smiled at Jeannie as she moved past her.

It was hard to know how to act. She knew any ricocheting emotions would be attributed to the date but still she felt nervous. It was sobering coming back here and seeing them. And it was so difficult to not be able to share what she found out. Visiting the grave yesterday, it's been so tempting to tell them then.

She opened the basement door and made her way down the stairs.

She still wasn't sure how to tell them. The plan was to bring Caiti back, she needed to see their father the most. But with Ryan and Tori here - she wanted to bring all of them. Chris wasn't sure how though.

Chris walked to the back of the basement. She had returned from Milliways through the one entrance to the basement from the outside. It was rarely used, even when having parties. For the past two days she'd gone to the door regularly to check that the other door was still there. It was surreal looking through the glass windows on the door and seeing the outside but opening it and looking into Milliways.

Her heart pounded a bit, like it did each time she checked. Maybe I've waited too long. If it's still here, I'll just take my chance now with everyone home. I'll open it and figure out a way to get them all down here. What I don't know...

She shook her head a little and put her hand on the doorknob. Quickly, she turned the knob and pulled the door open.

It took a few moments for her to understand what she saw.

Chris was looking into her own backyard.

The other door was gone.
