OOM: Date Night

Chris and Jack step out of the bar, into a cold New York City night.

The first big difference from Milliways? All the noise. The sound of horns from the cars on the street, cops blowing their whistles as they direct traffic and someone down the street playing a violin come together to create their own symphony.

She pulls her wrap a little tighter around her shoulders and looks over at Jack with a smile. "Surprise."

"At my house it was usually the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Or the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack," she says, stepping through the door.

"I used to watch that special every year when I was a kid--my Mom hated that song, though, 'Christmas Time is Here'. Used to drive her up the wall. Maybe because when I knew she didn't like it, I insisted on humming it often. And off-key, of course."

"You sound like a sweet child." Though it's nicer than the obnoxious stunts Chris used to pull.

"A perfect angel, of course. Well, to Mom at least. Mostly."

He shrugs. "Depends. When I was younger I learned to avoid getting caught, and when I was a teenager I was just belligerent. Dad and I didn't get along," he says once their tickets have been taken.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-11 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"What about when you were older?" She's still walking beside him, holding onto his arm.

"We didn't really talk for a long time. Not until my mother got really sick. We kind of patched things up before he died a few years later, but we never did get along that well." He gives her a wry smile, "I had issues with his authority. Not that that should be surprising."

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-11 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
She smirks. "I think Freud would have something to say about that. Displaced Father Issues or...something."

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-11 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
He rolls his eyes. "Freud had a lot to say about a lot of things which now sound pretty damn weird. You could also say my Dad gave me a low tolerance for bullshit," he says with a lopsided grin.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-11 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, if he ever pops into Milliways, I'm sure he'll be interested in hearing your thoughts," she says in a low.

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
He snorts. "Sweetheart, if Freud ever comes into Milliways, I think he'll ahve a lot more things to take up his attention than the opinions of one armchair psychologist."

They near the doors to the auditorum. This time, Chris reaches the door before Jack and opens it for him.

"After a visit to Milliways, I think he'd need some time on the couch."

"Or in a padded room. Though the bar's psychiatrists seem to have adapted well. Though one traps ghosts for a living and the other's dead, so..."

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think he might be a little out of his league among them," she says, walking down the aisle towards their seats.

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Possibly. He might end up seeing one of them," he says, standing back so Chris can enter their row ahead of him.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Chris walks ahead of him and takes a seat. "He'd probably find the advances in psychology as interesting as the bar itself."

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
He takes his seat after pulling fof his coat, and is about to reply when the orchestra begins their loud tune-up.

He takes Chris' hand with a glance at her and a grin, and settles back to listen.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Chris smiles back, giving his hand a squeeze, and settles in to listen to the music.

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
He enjoys the concert; his foot tapping along to the beat of the familiar Christmas carols and songs. The music is beautiful and familiar, and the members of the Canadian Brass fill the segues between pieces with amusing monologues. Definitely a nice way to start off the Christmas season, which is what his birthday usually felt like.

He takes Chris' arm as they merge into the aisle, so that they don't lose each other in the crush of people leaving the auditorium.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Chris had never heard the Canadian Brass perform before, so she was pleasantly surprised by the amusing asides in-between pieces. She links her arm through his and looks at Jack as the make their way up the aisle.

"So did you like?" She's guessing he had, Chris had noticed him tapping his foot along to some songs.

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-15 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes I did, very much. Thank you, sweetheart," he says, putting an arm around her waist.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Chris moves closer to him in response. “That was the first time I've ever seen the Canadian Brass perform. I think the Jubilate Deo piece was my favorite.”

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-12-16 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I liked that one, but I think I enjoyed 'Carol of the Bells' more; it's always been a favourite. So where are we off to now?" he asks as they step back out into the cold, noisy night.

[identity profile] geeky-agent.livejournal.com 2005-12-16 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"First, to find a cab. And then to the Rockefeller Center, where our hotel is."
